Widely spoken in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong Province, Cantonese is one of the seven major dialects of China. It is also the most widely spoken Chinese dialect by overseas Chinese communities. Its origin dates from as early as the Qin Dynasty (221 to 206 BC). During the Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 AD), the occupation of northern China by foreign invaders caused an exodus of the Han Chinese to southern China, where the Cantonese dialect took shape. Its long heritage and countless ties to ancient Chinese culture, together with the fact that Cantonese has far-reaching influence on the pop culture among the Asian Pacific region, all these have made Cantonese a very interesting and essential language.
