Non-credit-bearing Cantonese Courses

 

Introduction:

A series of non-credit-bearing courses in Cantonese are designed for students who want to learn Chinese language in a causal manner. Upon fulfilling the attendance requirement and completing specific language tasks, students will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance and with a “Pass” grade printed on their transcripts.

Course Structure:

Each course consists of 36 sessions. Elementary level courses combine lecture and e-learning while lecture teaching is the main component for advanced level courses.

Survival Cantonese for International Students

A non-credit-bearing basic Cantonese course designed for non-Chinese speakers, including exchange and international full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students, who use Chinese as a foreign/ second language and look for survival skills in Cantonese. The course is structured to help students communicate orally with the local people in Cantonese in different scenarios, with student-centred, proficiency-orientated activities based on useful daily expressions and basic vocabulary items. It focuses on student's oral skills and speaking ability. Real life settings are introduced such as shopping, introduction of oneself, asking directions, etc.

Survival Cantonese for Native Putonghua Speakers

A non-credit-bearing basic Cantonese course designed for full-time Putonghua-speaking undergraduate and postgraduate students from Mainland China, Taiwan, or other regions who are looking for survival skills in Cantonese. The course is structured to help students communicate orally with the local people of Hiong Kong in Cantonese in different scenarios, with student-centred, proficiency-orientated activities based on useful daily expressions and basic vocabulary items. The course focuses on student's oral skills and speaking ability.

Cantonese for Real Life Communication (Formal Setting)

A non-credit bearing Cantonese course designed for Putonghua speaking full-time undergraduate students, postgraduate students, tutors or research assistants from Mainland, Taiwan or other regions. The course is structured to help students in learning relevant expressions and to apply them in their tutorial lessons or at work. Training includes: (1) effective utilization of basic Cantonese in communicating with local students during tutorials and (2) proper use of academic Cantonese to make simple description and presentation of one’s thesis to their academic advisors or colleagues. Students will acquire relevant vocabularies under professional setting which in turn help them in adjusting to University and work life in Hong Kong. Ultimately, the learning atmosphere of tutorial class can be improved.
